Rapid Prompting Method, or RPM, is an educational tool that provides stimulating, age-appropriate academic teaching with strategies and accommodations so that anyone can be provided with appropriate exposure to learning. We have seen this method open up many doors for children on the Autism Spectrum who were considered "severe non verbal" before having an appropriate method of communication. RPM is not an overnight fix, but we have seen the changes it can make in a child's life to have a method of communication and to learn age appropriate lessons in an academic setting.
Pegasus Therapy embraces the model that children on the Autism Spectrum should be treated with the same level of respect as their neurotypical peers, starting with including the child in treatment conversations. We understand the complexities of motor planning for students on the Autism Spectrum and use this knowledge to educate the child and build foundational motor patterns, while checking in through RPM communication methods and adjusting the treatment accordingly. The most heartbreaking feedback we hear from clients through RPM is the prejudice they face every day from practitioners, teachers, and doctors who think this communication is somehow faked or ask for child to "prove it's real" instead of opening their minds to the idea that children on the Autism Spectrum have brains that work but bodies that often betray them when they try to "prove it".
Pegasus does not provide tutoring through Rapid Prompting, but we highly recommend services through our good friends at Wings To Fly. The owner and director of Wings to Fly, Donna Shank, has gained passion and a broad base of knowledge through first hand experience during her journey to facilitate independence in her younger son who received an "autism and other related disorders" diagnosis in 2005. She continually pushes herself to serve the autism community through providing a variety of free informational presentations and low cost training and education opportunities at Wings to Fly. She charges on a sliding scale. She is passionate that children on the Autism Spectrum should have the same rights of voicing their thoughts and opinions as their neurotypical peers.
